Not everyone is happy about GIFs in YouTube comments. Some viewers find them distracting, and some creators would rather keep their comment sections text-only. Here's what you can and can't do right now.
Short answer: As of October 2026, YouTube has no setting to turn off GIF comments specifically, for viewers or for creators. Creators can still moderate GIF comments like any other comment.
There's currently no option in the YouTube app or on the website to hide GIF comments or stop them from animating.
What you can do:
Some third-party browser extensions claim to collapse GIF comments on the desktop site. They're unofficial, so check reviews and permissions carefully before installing anything that runs on youtube.com.
Not specifically. Creators have been asking for a toggle, but YouTube hasn't announced one. A GIF comment is treated as a normal comment, so all of YouTube's standard comment controls apply:
YouTube's help page Learn about comment settings covers these options in detail.
YouTube hasn't said. The feature is still rolling out, and its Data API changelog says images and animated GIFs in comments will reach all users in November 2026. Creator controls often follow feedback, so we'll update this page if a GIF-specific toggle appears.
