YouTube GIF Comments Not Showing? Why You Don't Have the GIF Button

Don't see the GIF option in YouTube comments? Here's why, what you can check, and when GIF comments are expected to reach everyone.

Seeing GIFs in other people's comments but no GIF option in your own comment box? You're not alone. Here's what's going on and what you can do.

Short answer: YouTube is rolling GIF comments out gradually, account by account, and only in the mobile app. If your app is up to date and you're on a phone, you most likely just haven't been included yet.

Why you don't have GIF comments yet

1. The rollout is gradual

YouTube announced GIF comments in September 2026, and the first accounts started getting them in the mobile app around October 14, 2026. YouTube controls who gets the feature. There's no setting to turn it on and no way to opt in, so two people on the same phone model and app version can see different things.

2. You're on a computer

At the time of writing, the YouTube website has no GIF button, on desktop or on the mobile website (m.youtube.com). GIF comments are a feature of the YouTube app for iPhone, iPad and Android. More in GIF comments on PC.

3. Your app is out of date

New features often need the latest app version. Update YouTube from the App Store or Google Play, then fully close and reopen the app.

4. You're editing a comment or writing a community post

Reports so far say GIFs can only be added to new comments and replies on videos and Shorts. They aren't available when editing an existing comment or in channel community posts.

Checklist: what you can try

  1. Update the YouTube app to the latest version.
  2. Force-close and reopen the app.
  3. Try a video and a Short. Open the comments, tap the comment box and look for the GIF option.
  4. Try a different Google account in the app, if you have one. The rollout is per account.
  5. Wait. If none of that works, your account simply isn't included yet.

Avoid modified YouTube apps. "Early access" APKs and modded apps that promise GIF comments can put your Google account at risk. The feature is controlled on YouTube's side, so a modified app won't reliably unlock it.

When will everyone get GIF comments?

YouTube hasn't announced a date for every device. The clearest signal is YouTube's Data API changelog (September 30, 2026), which says support for images and animated GIFs attached to comments "will be available to all users in November 2026." That suggests a wider rollout in November, but availability may still differ by device and region until then.

We'll update this page as the rollout progresses.

You have the button, but a GIF won't post

  • The GIF may not be allowed. YouTube only accepts Tenor GIFs rated suitable for all audiences.
  • Check your connection and try again.
  • The channel may hold comments for review. Some creators review comments before they appear, and GIF comments are treated like any other comment.
