YouTube GIF Comments on PC & Browser Extensions (Do They Work?)

Can you post YouTube GIF comments on a computer? The current status on desktop, how YouTube GIF comment extensions work, why they stopped working in October 2026, and what to do instead.

GIF comments arrived in the YouTube mobile app in October 2026. If you mostly watch on a computer, you've probably noticed there's no GIF button there, and maybe tried a "YouTube GIF comments" browser extension. Here's the current situation.

Short answer: As of October 2026, the YouTube website has no built-in GIF button. You can see GIF comments on desktop, but posting them is a mobile app feature.

Can you see GIF comments on a computer?

Yes. GIF comments posted from the app are normal YouTube comments, so they show up when you browse comments on youtube.com.

Can you post GIF comments on a computer?

Not with YouTube's own website, at least not yet. The GIF option is only in the YouTube app for iPhone, iPad and Android. The mobile website (m.youtube.com) doesn't have it either.

YouTube hasn't announced when, or whether, the desktop site will get a GIF button. Its Data API changelog (September 30, 2026) says support for images and animated GIFs attached to comments "will be available to all users in November 2026," so a broader rollout is expected, but YouTube hasn't promised it on desktop.

Do YouTube GIF comment extensions work?

Several third-party extensions for Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox add a GIF button next to the emoji button in YouTube's desktop comment box.

How they work: YouTube's GIF comments store a reference to a Tenor GIF. These extensions search Tenor and attach that reference to your comment, the same way the mobile app does. Because the result is a normal GIF comment, people without the extension can see it too.

Do they work right now? Possibly not. From October 14, 2026, developers of a popular open-source extension reported that YouTube started rejecting GIF comments sent from the desktop site with a "Request contains an invalid argument" error. The comment's text still posted, but the GIF didn't. (GitHub issue) Extension makers may find workarounds, and YouTube may block them again. Expect this to keep changing until YouTube adds an official desktop button.

Older extensions worked differently: they inserted a link or tag into your comment and only showed the GIF to people who had the same extension installed. Those GIFs aren't real YouTube GIF comments.

Keep in mind:

  • They're unofficial. None are made or endorsed by YouTube.
  • They can break at any time, as the October 2026 change showed.
  • Be careful what you install. Extensions that run on youtube.com can see what you do there. Only install extensions from the official Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons, check the reviews, and avoid ones that ask for unnecessary permissions.

Your best options on a computer today

  1. Use your phone for GIF comments. Find the video in the YouTube app (it's in your history) and comment from there.
  2. Prepare the GIF on your computer. Make a reaction GIF from a clip with our free video to GIF maker. It works in any modern desktop browser and doesn't upload your file.
  3. Get it into YouTube via Tenor. YouTube only shows Tenor GIFs, so follow our guide on how to use your own GIF in YouTube comments.

FAQ

Is there a GIF button on YouTube on Chrome, Edge or Safari? Not built in, as of October 2026.

Is there an official YouTube GIF comments extension? No. YouTube hasn't released one. Every GIF extension is made by a third party.

Why does my GIF extension say "invalid argument"? Since October 14, 2026, YouTube has been rejecting GIF comments sent from the desktop site. It's a change on YouTube's side, not a problem with your browser.

Does YouTube Premium unlock GIF comments on desktop? No. Reports suggest GIF comments aren't limited to Premium, and Premium doesn't add a desktop GIF button.

Will GIF comments come to youtube.com? YouTube hasn't said. We'll update this page as soon as there's news.
